The Cumberland River ranks as one of the best tailwater destinations in the Southeastern United States. The rivers fishing starts at Wolf Creek dam which impounds the 50,000 acre Cumberland Lake and runs over 70 of the most beautiful and scenic miles to the Tennessee border. The river consists of farmland bottoms and high rock palisades. Home to abundant wildlife such as Whitetail deer, Wild Turkey, Bobcats, Mink and wintering Bald Eagles.
The cold water discharged through the hydro-power dam creates spectacular Rainbow and Brown trout habitat. The rivers fertile water produces prolific insect life, Caddis, Mayflies, Stoneflies and of course Midges. The large amount of food present produces rapid growth rate.
The Cumberland river holds the Kentucky State record for both Rainbow (14.6 lbs.) and Brown trout (21 lbs.). In addition to the fantastic trout fishing the river boost a great number of Walleye, Sauger and Stripers. Perhaps the only place to catch Walleye and Sauger on a Fly rod.
